Case study — Guinness World Records, 2008

P&G's 2008 Guinness World Records Photo Mosaic

For P&G's Pampers brand, P&G collected photographs from its customers to create a giant photo mosaic.

Our founder processed and prepared all 180,000 source photographs and created the giant mosaic artwork. The work included producing the digital preview, dividing the mosaic into individual print-ready sheets, and preparing a detailed workplan to guide the assembly of the complete installation.

P&G's production partner handled the physical printing and installation.

The completed mosaic covered 660.525 square meters (7,109.8 square feet) and contained 105,196 individual photographs. It was certified by Guinness World Records in Shanghai, China, on 27 April 2008.

Who Did What

A project of this scale was a collaboration with a clear division of responsibilities.

P&G

  • Collected photographs from its customers for the project

Our team

  • Processed and prepared all 180,000 source photographs
  • Created the giant photo mosaic artwork
  • Produced the digital preview
  • Divided the mosaic into individual print-ready sheets
  • Prepared the workplan guiding assembly of those sheets

P&G's production partner

  • Handled physical printing
  • Handled physical installation of the mosaic

From Photographs to a Record Mosaic

Our contribution covered everything between the collected photographs and the physical production — large-scale photo processing, mosaic artwork production, print-sheet preparation and installation workplan development.

    01

    Photograph Collection by P&G

P&G collected photographs from its customers for the project. The collection effort was P&G’s — our team did not gather the source photographs.

    02

    Processing 180,000 Source Photographs

Our founder processed and prepared all 180,000 source photographs — indexing, quality control and preparation for matching at a six-figure library scale.

    03

    Creating the Giant Mosaic Artwork

The giant mosaic artwork itself was created with the technology that became Photo Mosaic Maker: image matching and arrangement across the full library, composed to hold together at architectural scale.

    04

    Digital Preview and Print-Sheet Preparation

The work included producing the digital preview of the complete mosaic and dividing it into individual print-ready sheets for production.

    05

    Assembly Workplan

A detailed workplan was prepared to guide the assembly of the printed sheets into the complete installation on site.

    06

Printing and Installation by P&G’s Partner

Physical printing and physical installation of the mosaic were handled by P&G’s production partner, working from our print-ready sheets and assembly workplan.

The Guinness World Records Achievement

Guinness World Records certificate: "The largest photo mosaic measured 660.525 m² (7,109.8 ft²) and contained 105,196 individual photographs. It was created by P&G Pampers, in Shanghai, China, on 27 April 2008."

Photo mosaic work at this scale is a different discipline from producing a gift print. A six-figure photo library must be indexed, quality-controlled and matched; output must survive architectural reproduction; and every step must be documented to a standard that an external adjudicator can audit. This project demonstrates that our experience extends beyond photo-matching software into large-scale mosaic production and technical preparation.
